Francesca Cinquemani was one of five children born to a family in a tough area of the Bronx. Her father was an alcoholic and treated Francesca and her siblings terribly, often coming home drunk. Their mother was unable to control her husband and the children came to accept the abuse. One particularly vicious episode left Francesca so badly injured that she was frightened for her life. Terrified and determined, she left early the next morning, vowing to not accept the abuse any longer. She was on her own.
